Why We Shoot Boudoir Photography
My “WHY” for shooting boudoir
Why Boudoir Photography?
Sometimes I find it hard to put into works why we shoot boudoir photography. To me, it is so much more than photos. It’s about self-acceptance, body positivity, and art. It is about getting glammed up and laughing your butt off. It’s about the transformation that takes place between the time you walk in our studio and walk back out that door. It is about feeling beautiful and that is something I believe every person deserves.
We started shooting boudoir photography because we saw the beauty in everyone that came through our door. I believed we can show any person what I see through the amazing images we capture in our camera. Women tell me they feel they can’t look “that beautiful” because they feel too tall, weigh too much, or have too many stretch marks. We loved showing them the photos from their shoot and showing them that they CAN, in fact, feel beautiful too. Seeing their reactions to the pictures is what changed me. From that moment on, I knew I had found my passion.
The transformation that took place in our studio is the best part of the whole experience for us. When a woman arrives most of the time, she’s nervous, sometimes even visibly so. Shaky hands and voices, sweaty hands and faces are things I see all the time. Once they sit in the chair to get their hair and makeup done, the transformation begins. The client slowly starts to shed those signs and feelings of nervousness and anxiousness.
Then the shoot would start. The first series is to get you all warmed up. We take things at your pace and comfort level. When Russell show them a few pictures on the back of the camera after the first series I usually hear “Oh my gosh, that’s me? As we go into the next series and then the next the laughter and smiles start to come out. Then she starts to feel sexy. The sexy eyes come out and you can tell it’s starting to click with them, it’s okay to be yourself and have fun. It’s all about you and the beauty both inside and out.
By the time we finish we are friends. We have just shared an experience that they will always remember.
Once we show them their pictures on the screen, their jaws drop. They see themselves like they have never been before. This is one of the amazing things about boudoir photography. I get a chance to show them how I see them, how their spouses see them and HOW THEY SHOULD SEE THEMSELVES. When they walk out the door , smiling so big and they can’t wait to tell all their friends about what they just did, I feel my job is done. I’ve made a friend and it’s changed them in a positive way.
It is now my job to be a mirror for my clients is completed. Not the harsh mirror that the world shows you, that shames you, but the one who sees past all the lumps, scars, and imperfections. The one that shows you your sparkle.
My first experience with boudoir photography was 20 years ago. My aunts, sisters, and cousins would have girl’s night out once a month. One evening my very straight laced, conservative aunt surprised all of us by admitting she wanted to do something fun for her husband for their anniversary. She told us she had seen a picture of a woman wearing nothing but a sombrero and she had one from a trip they had taken out west. We were shocked. She asked if I would mind taking the pictures for her. At first, I was a little taken aback. Would it be awkward? After discussing it we decided we would all do it together. We brought props, and took turns doing each other’s make up. It was so much fun. We all had such different attitudes, ages (ranging 21-50), and body types, and comfort levels. Insecurities abounded and what worked for one didn’t work for all. But we didn’t mind. Perfection wasn’t the goal. I learned a lot that night about accepting and celebrating who you are and where you are in your life. And our husbands LOVED those pictures!
Yes, that’s me in the picture from my first professional boudoir session several years ago. I was so nervous and insecure. Russell made sure I felt comfortable and I was thrilled with how beautiful the pictures were and made me feel. Our photographer and my amazing husband, Russell, is one of the best in the business and I am very proud to say he was voted best photographer of 2019. He has studied under some of the best boudoir photographers in the world. He is an expert in posing, lighting and editing. He is a professional and wants to make sure his photos are as beautiful as you.
